The total number of volcanoes in Iceland is approximately 130, active and inactive all inclusive. Out of the total, only 30 are still active where you can see the eruption phenomenon. Eyjafjallajökull volcano

Eyjafjallajökull volcano is very famous and everyone knows about its eruption in 2010 and its devastating effects on air travel across the world. In reality, Eyjafjallajökull is one of the most active volcanos in Iceland. The volcano used to erupt more frequently from the time of the last glacial period.   

It spreads out on an area of around 100 sq. kilometers and is completely shielded by an ice cap. The activity of Eyjafjallajökull volcano is considered as intermediate but after 2010 there was no volcanic activity detected. 

Bárðarbunga volcano

Bardarbunga is the volcano created by the continuous and alternate layers of ash and lava and it is situated below the Vatnajökull glacier. Bardarbunga is considered as the component of the volcanic system that spread out to around 200 kilometers. The height of this volcano above the sea level is 2000 meters. 

Bardarbunga became famous when it starts erupting in 2014 and it stops erupting in just 181 days of its beginning. The location of this volcano is Vatnajokull national park which makes it accessible for tourists and visitors. 

Katla volcano

It is believed that the Katla volcano and Eyjafjallajökull volcano are geologically connected. It means that mostly at the time of Eyjafjallajökull eruption, Katla volcano also erupt with enhanced force and add to the destruction.

It is situated in the south of Iceland within the Mýrdalsjökull glacier. Due to its frequent and powerful eruption and huge destruction it has achieved a title of Iceland’s most dangerous volcano. Just like Eyjafjallajökull volcano, Katla also didn’t erupt after 2010. 

Grímsvötn volcano

There are lots of volcanoes found under Vatnajökull glacier and Grímsvötn volcano is one of them. It is basically a basaltic volcano and is situated on the northwestern face of the Vatnajökull glacier. With the greatest eruption rate among all the volcanoes found in Iceland, it caused huge destruction with its Laki eruption in 1783-84. 

High volcanic activity was noticed in Grímsvötn volcano and it last erupted in the year 2011. The volcano is very deeply checked and supervised due to the fact that its eruption can cause huge pressure and rising of ice cap over it which leads to a condition called jökulhlaup.

Hverfjall volcano

It is situated on the eastern shore of Mývatn Lake and in the North of Iceland. The Hverfjall is also known as “high tephra explosion” which means that it has a wide and circular ring-like structure over its top which is about 3000 feet in width.  

The tourists visiting Hverfjall volcano are allowed to hike the whole ring of the volcano and it takes only 20 minutes to do it. When you reach on the top, you would be able to get stunning views of the close by lake.
