[title] => Reykjavík Classic Whale Watching
    [description] =>

Enjoy 3 hrs. at sea with our expert crew and specially trained naturalists in search for the whales and wildlife of Reykjavík. The city view and landscape of the bay is also not to be missed and adds that something special to the experience.

Meet us at our red and white ticket office in the Old Harbour in downtown Reykjavík where you will exchange your pre-paid voucher for admission tickets. A few steps down the pier you will find our Visitor Centre, facilitated on board a converted fishing vessel permanently placed by the pier. That is where you will be greeted by the crew. Have a look at our souvenir shop, warm up with a cup of coffee in our café or head downstairs in the hull of the boat and stroll through our wildlife exhibition; the only one of its kind in the world!

Onboard you will find several outdoor viewing platforms, an indoor saloon with large wide-range windows, a cafeteria where you can buy light refreshments, toilet facilities and a cloak room where you can borrow our blankets and overalls for the duration of the tour. You can stay outside in the fresh air but you are also welcome to settle inside the heated lounge and observe the views from within. Our excellent naturalists will give a commentary throughout and explain the sights and encounters as we go and the crew is happy to answer any questions you may have along the way!

The most common species encountered on our tours are the minke whales, humpback whales, white-beaked dolphins and harbour porpoises. Occasionally we see other species such as killer whales, fin whales, sei whales and long-finned pilot whales, although they are not as common. The whales are most abundant in summer, giving us a great chance to enjoy and understand them in their natural environment while they are feeding on fish and krill near our shores, although each year continues to surprise us with the variety of wildlife we see in winter and our research shows that more and more whales are staying in the area year round!

Keep in mind:
This is a wildlife excursion and as such we can never guarantee or predict sightings of any kind, but in case we don't encounter any whales or dolphins, we will not refund the tour price, but rather offer you a complimentary ticket so you can join us again another day (within 2 years) for FREE!
We reserve the right to alter routes and itineraries by sometimes sailing from other harbours, which could result in a slightly longer tour. If you are on a tight schedule we suggest you consult with our sales representatives.
If you are traveling in winter (Nov-Feb), we ask that you rather book our 'Reykjavík Winter Whale & Dolphin Watching' option for more details on our winter operation.

COMBO: Combine this activity with Puffin Watching or a Northern Lights Cruise! You can also check out other combo packages we have put together.

The safety and enjoyment of our passengers is our number one priority and therefore the tour could get cancelled on short notice, depending on the weather and conditions at sea. In this case, we will try our best to contact you as soon as possible to let you know. Check our 'Whale Diary' in the hours leading up to your tour for any additional updates.

This is the original whale watching tour from Reykjavík and one of the most popular attractions in Iceland! Join us for a chance to encounter the incredible whales and dolphins of Faxaflói bay.

Weather at sea is always colder than on land and therefore we recommend dressing appropriately, by wearing warm clothing and good sturdy shoes. You can also borrow one of our warm blankets and overalls provided on board if needed.

For optimal viewing and a more enjoyable cruise this tour is weather dependent

We abide by a Code of Conduct for responsible whale watching, thus each encounter is on the animal's terms and distance may be kept to minimise disturbance.

Click here for more information on the cetacean you can expect to see on the tour. If no whales or dolphins make an appearance on your tour we will offer you a complimentary ticket valid for two years.

Our whale watching tours are focused mainly on the southern part of Faxaflói bay, just off Reykjavík. Each day we scan the area for signs of whales as we never know for sure where we might find them. Sometimes we have to go far while at other times the whales are quite close to the shore. On some occasions (mainly in winter), when weather conditions or chances of spotting whales are greater elsewhere than our regular area in Faxaflói, we depart from nearby harbours like Hafnarfjörður, Keflavík, Sandgerði or Grindavík making the tours last anywhere from 3-5 hrs.

) [4] => stdClass Object ( [type] => string [flags] => Array ( [0] => faq ) [code] => FAQ [title] => [inputFieldId] => [value] => When is the best time to go whale watching, morning or afternoon?
● As the tours are run in wild nature and the whales don’t come up by schedule it just depends on the day.
Sometimes there is more activity and/or less wind in the morning than in the afternoon and vice versa. It
might come in handy to look at our online Whale Diary before the tour to see how our sightings have been
the days before.

How close do you get to the whales?
● It depends on the whales as we focus on whale friendly whale watching. Sometimes the whales are just as
curious about us as we are of them and come close to the boat while at other times they tend to stay away.

How do you find the whales?
● We use the most non-invasive method; only our naked eyes and binoculars. Our experience and knowledge
of the area is also supplementing.

What happens if I don’t see any whales on the tour?
● The tours are run in wild nature and we can never guarantee sightings on a particular tour. Our sighting
success is very high but in the unlikely event that you don’t see whales or dolphins, you are offered a
complimentary tour. It might come in handy to look at our online Whale Diary before the tour to see how our
sightings have been the days before.

What kind of whales can I expect to see?
● The whale watching tours are wildlife excursions and therefore we never know beforehand what animals
we might spot. The most common whales in the area are minke whales, humpback whales, white-beaked
dolphins and harbour porpoises but on rare occasions we’ve seen orca, fin whales, sei whales and even
blue whales. The sightings are slightly seasonal, as the large proportion of the baleen whales tend to
migrate south during the winter. It might come in handy to look at our online Whale Diary before the tour to
see what species we’ve been the days before.

Where is the best position on the boat?
● Everyone has their favourite spot. The front and the sides on the viewing platforms are great spots. The
back of the boat tends to be the best spots for those sensitive to motion sickness and for those who prefer to
stay on the insides the side windows of the saloon come in handy.

How should I dress for the tour?
● There is no dress code but we always recommend dressing warmly as it is a bit colder on the water than in
land. On board we offer use of warm floatable overalls, raincoats and blankets free of charge but gloves and
hats might come in handy, especially during the winter months.

I am prone to seasickness, is the tour advisable for me?
● It depends on the conditions on the day of the tour. In the ticket office you can get the best available
information about the conditions at sea. You can come on the day of the tour or the day before and we will
advise you what to do. We also offer free motion sickness tablets if you want to take one before the tour. If
our recommendations is not to do the tour on a particular day, we can also help you alter your travel itinerary
if needed.

Do you sell any refreshments on board?
● Yes, Elding whale watching boats have an on board café where you can buy light refreshments during the
tour.

Are there toilets on board?
● Yes, Elding boats have all the toilet facilities you would expect.

Do you offer discounts for children?
● Yes, check our prices for special children fares on each tour.

Do you offer discounts for groups?
● Please contact our sales office at elding [at] elding.is with your details and we will be happy to make you an
offer.

Do you offer wheelchair access?
● Yes our boats are wheelchair accessible. However, each boat has more than one level and there is no
elevator on board. This means little or limited access to indoor area, toilets and on board café.

Do you offer hotel pick up?
● Yes we offer pick up and drop off at hotels and guesthouses in Reykajvík area for an additional charge.

Is there parking close by?
● Yes, about 300 m from our ticket office there is a large gravel parking lot where you can park free of charge.
GPS: N64°09’08’’ W21°56’55 / N64 09.141 W21 56.926

My tour was cancelled. What do I do next?
● The Elding team happily advises and assists you to find a new departure date if possible when the weather
conditions are better. No charge is made on our behalf if you cannot join our tour due to cancellation of the
tour.

Tour Description

Whale Watching

If you’re some fascinated by the nature and the majestic creatures that dwell in it then the Reykjavik Classic Whale Watching tour Iceland is a package made for you!

The tour will begin at our ticket office where you will purchase your tickets and begin the experience of a lifetime. Just a short distance away you’ll find our Visitor Centre where you will find a fishing vessel on the pier. There you will meet our very charming crew- your tour guides.

During the tour you can visit the shops for souvenir shopping, enjoy refreshments at the Whale Cafe located on board or even take a look around at the Exhibition situated in the hull of the vessel. The multimedia show is a fun filled knowledge gaining opportunity where you can see images and videos and learn about whales and even other marine animals that you might be expected to come across during the tour.

From thereon you will be led to the whale watching vessel where the main part of the tour will take place.

Once you are aboard the tour boat, you will discover that it will have several out door viewing platforms and not only this but much more. We have a lot to offer our tourists and some of these things include, a very spacious indoor saloon, a cafe to satisfy your appetite for light snacks, basic restroom facilities and even a cloakroom where we provide you with warm blankets and overalls to keep you cosy and comfortable on colder days! Our lounges are fully heated and offer a large panoramic view of the outdoors beyond. Your tour guide will not only narrate what will be happening but also be happy to answer any questions you may have while on tour.

We offer tours both in the summers and winters. The summer tour lasts all the way from 1st April to 31st October. These are the best months to come enjoy the wildlife.

We also offer tours during the winter months and those last all the way from 1st November to 31st March. Winter season tours are something else and the sights of the low lying sun over the horizon is nothing short of a movie scene.

While on whale watching Reykjavik, you’re most likely to see cetaceans like the Minke Whales, The Harbour Porpoises and even the White Beaked Dolphins. However if you’re lucky enough you might end up catching sight of the Orcas, Fin Whales and maybe even the Great Blue Whale among others.

With that said we offer you the chance to come experience ocean wildlife like never before. We do however reserve the right to change routes according to weather conditions and considering these tours take place in the wild setting of nature, we cannot unfortunately guarantee you sure-fire sightings but we do promise a good time during this whale watching Iceland!
